Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy & Parts Work in Lehi, Utah

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy & Parts Work in Lehi, Utah

Internal Family Systems is a compassionate, evidence-informed approach that treats the mind as a system of “parts.” At Therapy Utah, our trained therapists use IFS to help you understand those parts, ease their burdens, and lead your life from a calmer, more grounded place.

What is Internal Family Systems?

A model that sees the mind as made up of distinct parts, each trying to protect you in its own way.

IFS, sometimes called “parts work,” is built on the idea that we all have an inner family of parts. Some are protective, some carry pain from the past, and some step in to manage situations the best way they know how. Beneath all of them is your core Self, a calm, curious, compassionate center that can lead. When parts are stuck in old roles, you might feel pulled in different directions, criticized from the inside, or hijacked by reactions that don’t match the present.

Rather than treating these parts as problems to eliminate, IFS helps you get to know them with curiosity and compassion. As parts feel heard and their burdens lighten, the inner system relaxes and your Self can take the lead. IFS is increasingly used for trauma and is often blended with EMDR, somatic therapy, and ACT.

What IFS can help with

Parts work can ease a wide range of struggles, especially those tied to inner conflict and old wounds.

If part of you wants to change while another part resists, IFS gives you a way to work with that tension instead of fighting it.

How IFS works and what to expect

A gentle, curiosity-driven process led from your own Self.

1

Get to know your parts

Your therapist helps you notice the different parts at play and approach them with curiosity rather than judgment.

2

Build trust from Self

As you connect with parts from a calm, compassionate center, protective parts begin to relax and let you understand what they’ve been guarding.

3

Unburden and integrate

Wounded parts can release the pain they’ve carried, freeing the whole system so you can respond to life with more balance and choice.

Is IFS right for you?

A good fit if you’re drawn to a compassionate, depth-oriented way of working.

IFS tends to resonate with people who feel at war with themselves, who carry a loud inner critic, or who want to understand the roots of their patterns rather than only manage symptoms. It’s gentle but can go deep, and it pairs naturally with trauma work. If you’d prefer a more structured, skills-first approach, CBT or DBT may suit you better. Several of our therapists are trained in IFS, including Amanda Heaton, Natasha Griffiths, and Wendy Migdat. During your intake we’ll talk through what fits you best.

Work with an IFS-trained therapist

Individual sessions are $125–$200 and last 50–60 minutes, depending on the therapist you match with. Before we match you, you’ll complete a 50–60 minute intake and assessment for $150.

IFS FAQ

A few of the questions we hear most often.

Does “parts” mean something is wrong with me?

Not at all. Having parts is normal and human. IFS simply gives language to the different aspects of your inner world so you can understand and work with them more effectively.

Is IFS the same as having multiple personalities?

No. IFS describes the natural multiplicity of a healthy mind, not a clinical disorder. Everyone has parts, and IFS helps them work together under the leadership of your core Self.

Is IFS good for trauma?

Yes. IFS is widely used for trauma and is often combined with EMDR or somatic work. Your therapist will move at a pace that keeps you grounded and safe.

Can IFS be combined with other therapies?

Absolutely. Our therapists frequently blend IFS with EMDR, ACT, and other approaches, building a plan around your goals rather than a single technique.

How much does it cost?

Sessions are $125–$200 each, depending on the therapist you match with. You’ll also complete an initial intake and assessment for $150. We’re a private-pay practice.
