Sand Tray & Play Therapy in Lehi, Utah
Children, teens, and even adults often heal more easily through play than through words. At Therapy Utah, our trained therapists use sand tray and play therapy to help clients express, process, and work through feelings that are hard to say out loud.
What are sand tray and play therapy?
Expressive, evidence-informed approaches that use play as the language of healing.
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate way to help children communicate and work through their experiences. For young people, play is their natural language — through toys, games, art, and storytelling, they can show and process things they don’t yet have words for. A trained play therapist creates a safe space and follows the child’s lead, helping them make sense of big feelings, build coping skills, and feel understood.
Sand tray therapy is a powerful form of expressive work that uses a tray of sand and a collection of miniature figures. Clients of any age build scenes that represent their inner world, often revealing thoughts and emotions that talk therapy alone can’t reach. Because it’s hands-on and symbolic rather than purely verbal, sand tray can be especially gentle for processing trauma. Both approaches are central to our work in child and adolescent therapy.

Is sand tray or play therapy right for your child?
It’s a strong fit when words alone aren’t enough.
If your child struggles to talk about what’s bothering them, shuts down in traditional talk therapy, or is working through something frightening or confusing, play and sand tray therapy can open a door that words can’t. Teens and adults benefit too — sand tray, in particular, helps people of any age access and process experiences that feel too tender or tangled to put into language.
Several of our therapists are trained in sand tray and play therapy, including Blake Adams, CSW, Natasha Griffiths, and Harris Moriarty, CMHC. During intake, we’ll match your child or family with the right therapist and approach.
Help your child feel understood
Therapy Utah is a private-pay practice. Sessions are typically 50–60 minutes, and we’ll confirm pricing and your therapist match during intake.
Book your intakeSand tray & play therapy FAQ
A few of the questions parents ask us most.
What ages is play therapy for?
Play therapy is especially effective for children, often from around age 3 through the tween years. Sand tray and expressive approaches also work well for teens and adults.
Is it really therapy, or just playing?
It’s genuine, structured therapy. For children, play is the natural way they communicate and process experience, and a trained therapist uses it intentionally to support real emotional healing.
Will I be involved as a parent?
Yes. Parent involvement is an important part of the work. Your therapist will check in with you, share guidance, and at times bring you into sessions or recommend family therapy.
Can adults benefit from sand tray therapy?
Absolutely. Sand tray therapy helps adults access and process emotions and memories — including trauma — that are hard to reach through talk alone.
How do I know if my child needs therapy?
Big behavior changes, ongoing worry or sadness, withdrawal, or a hard life event are all good reasons to reach out. Our intake specialist can help you decide on a path forward.
